Okay, everything about the last 2 episodes of Abbott Elementary ("The Mall" parts 1 &2) was THE BEST.

I haven't laughed so hard in a while.

In other news, my nephew and I keep texting each other "wtf?" about everything the Mets have done (or not done) this offseason. Today we were just like, "Wtf?" The Mets now have like 17 second basemen. Hopefully at least one can pitch and one can play left field, because those are the spots they needed to fill. Now they are going to put Bichette at third and Baty in left? What is happening!?! Also, have an obligatory fuck the Dodgers!

Meanwhile, the Rangers' sell-off begins. It's the right thing but ugh, it's going to be hard if Panarin goes to Florida. I can and do root for Detroit and Dallas, but I cannot root for Florida. I guess we'll see what happens. Maybe they'll be able to foist Miller off on someone else too. *crosses fingers*

Wow, that's a lot. :D It's nowhere near all of them, even all of the ones good enough to share.

These are the ones I selected to share in Three for the Memories as my most memorable (not most aesthetic or most technically ept) from 2025.

New Year's Resolutions Check In

We made it through the second week of January. This is enough to get a better grasp of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also into the period of rapid die-off. We have reached the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter's Day because so many people give up their New Year's resolutions then. See also the parallel check in post over on [community profile] goals_on_dw.

Feel free to copy the idea of a New Year's resolution check-in to your blog or other venue, to encourage yourself and your friends. Many people find that social support helps maintain resolutions. This is one area where online activity works as well as or better than facetime activity. Apps work too, with trackers for most popular goal categories. Consider the pros and cons of getting your friends to help. Here on Dreamwidth we have [community profile] awesomeers and [community profile] do_it that may prove helpful for social support of goals. Some craft communities like [community profile] get_knitted and [community profile] justcreate also have check-in posts.

According to an email from Facebook, the survey found that those who shared their New Year's resolution on Facebook were 36 percent more likely to stick to it. Additionally, 52 percent of those surveyed agreed that sharing their resolutions with others is helpful when it comes to accomplishing them. In my experience, saying (or posting) things out loud definitely makes them feel more real. Plus, if other people know about a goal you're trying to achieve, it may motivate you to keep working at it so you can provide future updates on your progress.

I was talking about story exchanges with friends and realized my kink list of yes/no/maybe in fiction dated to 2011.

And that that was 15 years ago.

I overhauled it, so for anyone interested in a dive into my kinks, by all means have at.

why we invented headphones

Good Evening, you Beautiful People!

What a day -- both productive and unproductive. I spent a lot of time on YouTube and reading articles about how abstinence can apply to food. I didn't fold the towels or do any cleaning, but I have decided on the backbone of my personal abstinence plan. For me, it's not about sugar. Yes, overly processed foods aren't healthy for me, but when I get down to the core of what trips my thinking to overindulgent eating, I find an awful lot of fat. Does that mean I'm going fat-free? Nope. That's not a healthy way to eat.

While my daughter can't stand Michael Pollan and thinks he is arrogantly pedantic, I think he's right, at least on two counts: eat food, mostly plants. Does that mean I'm becoming vegan? Nope, not doing that either.

This is what I plan to do:

  • eat three meals* a day, whole foods as much as possible
  • limit the use of fat

And this is what I won't do:

  • eat high-fat--particularly deep-fried--foods
  • eat or drink foods high in caffeine

I'll check in on how this is going. Maybe not every day, but regularly.

Emotionally, today was mostly a good day, until I heard the evening news. The state of the world is well beyond my own personal hula hoop, and I know I can't control it, but I still react to news at a gut level, and let's just say that it's not a very pleasant reaction. Since I don't seem to control that reaction very well, I think I need to go back to avoiding as much new as possible. That's why we invented headphones, right? So we can hear what we need to hear and turn off the rest of the world a bit? Maybe it's not the healthiest reaction, but it's in my toolbox, so that's what I'm using for now.

Okay. That's it for today. I hope you found some beauty in your day, and as always, thank you for being here!

Today's frivolous low-stakes question is: if following a recipe, to what extent do you consider "mixed lettuces", "mixed greens", and "mixed leaf salad" synonymous?

I was not pursuing watching Heated Rivalry. Truly, I wasn't. I read the HR book (but none of the other books in the series). It was nice. (Not typically what I look for in fanfic, but it's OK; sometimes it's downright lovely.) I found the novel to read like "angst with a happy ending," the end.

I did not find it earth shattering, but that might be because I did not actually read it; I listened to the audio book. So I suspect I missed a lot that I would've otherwise gotten if I read the book, because my eyes work better with my brain than my ears do (except when it comes to music enjoyment).

Just ask every parent - and teacher - even friends - who ever tried to give me verbal step by step instructions for doing anything. I was not good at that. Reading from A WRITTEN LIST of instructions, no prob. Listening and organizing verbal instructions? Yeah, I suck at that. (And then in my 4th decade, I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. Coincidence? I think not.)

Yeah, I heard all the buzz about the series. But I am one of those "if it's 'trending', I'm the opposite of interested" cranks. I generally hate being told what to look at/watch/listen to/do by anyone/anything who isn't paying my hourly wage - especially any algorithms.

(To be fair, I don't much like being told what to do by those who pay me to do my job, either - especially when it's stupid, bad for patients, and/or violates the manager's/employer's/facility's existing policies. But then, they are paying me, so I tend to listen, even if it's stupid, because I have bills to pay until I die. Anything 'trending' anything is not paying me to pay attention to it. So. I tend to ignore "trending." *shrug*)

But as I was, uh, let's say "obtaining" Heated Rivalry for a friend over last weekend, I thought: well, since I have all six episodes of S1 now, I might as well watch it... So I did. Here's my review. No spoilers.

First, though, I'm going to say - very earnestly - something not said much in fandom anymore (not nearly as often as it was, say, 5-10 years ago):

omg - the feels!

Seriously. There are some very heart-clenching, angsty moments in certain HR episodes that broke me in the best possible way. Angst is my jam, so - guh. I could hardly take it, the angst was so achingly good.

Other thoughts in no particular order, with no spoilers )
I really liked Heated Rivalry. A lot. They really did a great job with this series. I'm proud to have been enjoying similarly Canadian made little TV series gems for decades (Forever Knight... due South...) - and I'm so glad to see another one, this time apparently taking the world by storm.

Also, kudos to Jacob Tierney (Glen on Letterkenny) for helming such an incredible project.
